DescriptionSouth Africa 1 millionth Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision (40944402290).jpg |
USAID and South African government officials gathered on May 25, 2018 in Durban to celebrate the 1 millionth Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision in the province of Kwazulu Natal under an HIV prevention program supported by USAID and the President's Emergency Plan for Aids Relief (PEPFAR). Well-known South African singer and actor Melusi Yeni, an "amabassador" for voluntary medical male circumcision, was the 1 millionth man to be circumcised. Afterward, he told the news media, "Let's make it 2 million!" The King of the Zulus, Goodwill Zwelithini, the highest representative of traditional Zulu culture, joined in the celebration. Kwazulu Natal has the highest incidence of HIV of any province in South Africa. Photo: Victoria O'Hara, USAID |
