Summary[edit]

Description

Space Shuttle Discovery (OV-103), alongside twin sister Atlantis, was commissioned in the late 1970s, when the design work on the Space Shuttle was finalized, the first two orbiters (Enterprise and Columbia) had already been built, and a four-orbiter fleet was needed to operate a planned once-weekly schedule to space. Discovery was delivered in 1983 and put into service in 1984, shortly after Challenger, a former stress test article, had entered service in place of Enterprise.

Discovery was the workhorse of the Space Shuttle fleet. It operated all sorts of missions, including classified Department of Defense missions, and it operated both "Return to Flight" missions after suspensions caused by Challenger and Columbia disasters. All in all, Discovery flew 39 missions over 365 days in space, covering 149 million miles (240 million km); it is the most traveled manned spaceship in history, and with future spacecraft going back to cheaper disposable designs, Discovery will retain that distinction for at least centuries to come.

Discovery is now the star attraction at the Udvar-Hazy Center at Dulles Airport, an annex of Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. What a sight!
