Description

Space Shuttle Discovery is the star attraction of the James S. McDonnell Space Hangar at Udvar-Hazy Center.

Udvar-Hazy opened in 2003 as the annex of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. Located on Dulles Airport, this facility can house many exhibits that are too big for the main museum on the Washington Mall. The facility was home to a number of rare artifacts, including an SR-71, a B-29, and Space Shuttle Enterprise. With the retirement of the Space Shuttles, Enterprise was sent to Intrepid Air & Sea Museum in New York City, and Udvar-Hazy instead received the Discovery, the most traveled manned spacecraft in history.
