There is no material so humblebut it can be ennobled through thought. Brick,for instance, is a very humble material, an insig-nificant unit of baked clay, the oldest of manu-factured products, commonly used for streetpavements and foundation walls, and yet throughall the ages it has responded to the call for beauty,to the longing for art. There is brickwork inPersian mosques and palaces that rivals in pat- of clay-workers, and we have inherited a feelingfor the bricks quality and color and for its layingand jointing. In Philadelphia and Wilmingtonthe brick with its marble sills and door-steps hasa Quaker look. And you will find that the brick-work of every town and country that you visitcan tell you much about its personality. In thecarpenter workshop the brickwork has been laidwith large join
