And assome of our newspapers have recently pointed out,in looking back over 1909, we realize that it, too,is a remarkable year, and likely to be famous inhistory as a year in which great things were done. On the opposite page you will see the portraitsof eight celebrated men,-all born in 1809, andeach of whom attained high eminence and renownin literature, music, science, or statesmanship. To the girls and boys of the United Statesprobably the centennial anniversary of the birthof President Abraham Lincoln—one of our great-est Presidents —was the most conspicuous becauseof its general celebration in the schools.
