A PAIR OF WORKERS STACKING SQUARED LOGS. Mogok, the city of ruby mines, I saw a caravanof laden elephants traversing a jungle paththrough bamboo and coarse grass fourteen feethigh. The track in some cases was embanked,but heavy rains had undermined the soil; andjust as the biggest elephant was passing, thehigh embankment gave way under his weight,and with a scream of terror the huge animal fellsideways, rolled over and over no less than fivetimes, and at last, to the immense relief of hismahout, stopped short on the brink of a deepravine. Of course it was thought the elephantwas killed. He was none the worse for his one sees the working elephant at his best. Asfast as the trees are cut down and trimmed, teamsof elephants with harness and chains are attachedto the huge logs, which are promptly draggedthrough forest paths to the nearest stream.
