Description
English: St Peter's Church, Hoveton, Norfolk - organ. Two hatchments of the Negus family. (Source: Farrer, Edmund, Church Heraldry of Norfolk, Vol 1, 1885, pp.374-5[1]).
  • Left: (see better image[2]) Ermine, on a chief nebulée azure three escallops or (Negus) (Burke, Sir Bernard, The General Armory, London, 1884, p.725 "Negus of Norfolk", same arms as "Negus of Brome, Suffolk") impaling Argent, a chevron gules on a chief of the second three mullets (of six points) pierced of the first (Fowke of Elmsthorpe, Leicestershire) (Farrer, p.375; Burke, p.372). Possibly for Henry Negus, one of the sons of Henry Negus of Hoveton by his wife Deborah Richardson. He was secretary to the Duke of Norfolk, Lord Lieutenant in 1685, and was captain in the Militia in 1687. He married Sarah Fowle (Fowke?), daughter of ... Fowle/Fowke of Yarmouth. His son was Henry Negus (1685-1727) who married Christiana Palgrave, a daughter and co-heiress of Thomas Palgrave, brewer, of Norwich. Johnson. Henry Negus (born 1708) was High Sheriff of Norfolk in 1740. (Portraits in Norfolk Houses, p.60).
Overall an inescutcheon of pretence: Or, on a chief indented azure two mullets of the field (Dey or D'Eye) (Burke, Sir Bernard, The General Armory, London, 1884, p.283 "Dey, granted to Henry Dey of Oxborough, Norfolk, by Dethick, Garter, 1597"). Crest: A bird (seamew?) resting its dexter claw on an escallop or. For Henry Negus of Bungay and Hoveton Hall, who married Mary D'Eye, a daughter and co-heiress of Thomas D'Eye. His daughter and heiress was Christabel Negus (d.1843), who married James Burkin Burroughes (1760-1803) of Burlingham Hall, Norfolk (Portraits in Norfolk Houses, pp.54/5[file:///C:/Users/Owner/Downloads/PortraitsinNorfolkHouses_11331134%20(1).pdf])

  • Henry Negus of Hoveton St Peter, who married Mary Loveland, daughter of John Loveland, hosier and Alderman of Norwich.
    • Elizabeth Negus (1637-1706), daughter, who married Thomas Blofeld (c.1635-1708), 6 times MP for Norwich; the arms of Blofeld impaling Negus are sculpted on the front of Hoveton House, which he built. (see: BLOFIELD, Thomas (c.1635-1708), of Norwich Hoveton, Norf., Published in The History of Parliament: the House of Commons 1660-1690, ed. B.D. Henning, 1983[5])
    • Henry Negus of Hoveton, son, who married Deborah Richardson;
      • Henry Negus (born c.1668- ) son, of Hoveton St Peter, Secretary to the Duke of Norfolk and Lord Lieutenant of Norfolk in 1685, Capt. of Militia in 1687. He married Sarah Fowle (Fowke?), daughter of ... Fowle (Fowke?) of Yarmouth;

          • Henry Negus (born 1708) of Hoveton Hall, son, Sheriff of Norfolk in 1740 and Customer (of the Port of Yarmouth?) who married Christabella Johnson, daughter of .... Johnson;
            • Henry Negus (born 1734), son, of Bungay and Hoveton Hall, an attorney, who in 1761 married Mary D'Eye, a daughter and co-heiress of Thomas D'Eye;
              • Chrisabelle Negus (d.1843), daughter and heiress of Hoveton Hall, who in 1779/80 married James Burkin Burroughes (1760-1803) of Burlingham Hall, Norfolk;
                • Henry Negus Burroughes (1791-1872), son, MP for Norfolk, who in 1818 married firstly Jane Hoste, sister of Sir William Hoste, 1st Baronet.
