GENERAL INFORMATION History of The School. It was not until about thirty years ago that the public mindin Virginia came to connect the stableness of free institutionswith the intelligence of the people, and to see that general educa-tion is the basis of general thrift. The first Legislature to as-semble after the adoption of the post-bellum Constitution estab-lished (July ii, 1870) a system of public free schools. For adozen years or more the conduct of these schools was entrustedto such teaching force as was found ready at hand. In thisexperimental period nothing was more fully demonstrated thanthat, if the returns were to be in any wise commensurate withthe cost and the high mission of the system, some provision mustbe made for a reliable source of supply for teachers fitted byeducation and training for their work. To meet this demandthe Legislature, in March, 1884, passed an act establishing theState Female Normal School. In October of the same year thework of the school was begun,statefemalenorm190607stat
