Summary[edit]

Description

Stone Faces, Leeds Town Hall, UK, 27082016 JCW1967, OPE, HDR (1).

The Mawer Group of sculptors sometimes made jokes intended to be understood by other artists only. The male actors of ancient Greek theatre had to play the part of women as well as men, and members of the Mawer Group were expected to model some of these heads of male actors. One of the major symbols of Aphrodite (Venus) is a cockle shell. So here is Robert Mawer modelling Aphrodite's cockle shell crown and making a wry face.
