Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
There are several tools to upload files.
Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.

Made a mistake?

Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.
Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

Wikidata field in artwork template[edit]

Images from Geograph Britain and Ireland[edit]

Hello. I notice you've been uploading pictures to Commons from Geograph Britain and Ireland. This is good and you should continue. However, you have been marking them with a subtly wrong licence. Geograph uses CC BY-SA 2.0, but you've often used {{Cc-by-sa-2.5}}. One way to get this right is to use Geograph2Commons, a link to which you can find at the bottom of the "reuse" page attached to each Geograph image (like this one). Alternatively, you can use the {{Geograph}} template with your favourite upload mechanism. Fill it in with the image number and author name, like this: {{Geograph|4886724|Mark Stevenson}}. --bjh21 (talk) 12:44, 5 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

your upload probs[edit]

Hi Sic19, thanks for contributing to our project! I just noticed your problems when you tried to upload some images. They are caused by URL shorteners like goo.gl, flic.kr or youtu.be which are not allowed here to be used as web links. If you used the full URLs instead it will run smoothly. Uploads and categories[edit]

Thank you for uploading more pictures of Yorkshire! However, please check whether you can put them in the proper categories straight away. For instance, Beverley Minster is not in West Yorkshire, and there is already category for it. @Jarekt: Why not be helpful and provide a list of the problems you have identified? Then I can fix them and the problems are resolved. Also, I have removed multiple incorrect QIDs that have been added to this collection by other editors - but I know they probably made a genuine mistake and haven't started complaining on both Commons and Wikidata.

Have you realised that the structured data from Wikidata corrects the errors with the dimensions in the Commons metadata? That is a good reason not not merge the Wikidata items.

Finally, your scrutinising of my edits on both Wikidata and Commons is making me feel slightly uncomfortable. I would have preferred to discuss what are clearly related issues either here or on my Wikidata talkpage before you asked the community whether you can start merging items. Simon, Sorry if it feels like I am stalking you. I just did some changes to Module:Artwork and {{Photograph}} and was monitoring Category:Pages with script errors for any errors my edit might be causing and instead I found a lot of errors related to edits by your bot. I assume that many were due to other people adding, often incorrect, Q-numbers to the files you are working on. I fixed all the problems I have identified, since I needed to empty Category:Pages with script errors. But there seem to be a lot of mismatches between images in Handle ID (P1184) and in image (P18). I will see if I can be more helpful. The question with merging is not about you, but more of a discussion with community, since I do not think we want items for every print of some engraving, which might have large number of identical copy. --Jarekt (talk) 02:50, 10 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Jarekt: Thanks for your message and especially for fixing the problems caused by my edits - I really appreciate you doing that. You don't need to apologise to me - bringing these problems to my attention and discussing potential merges is appropriate. Unfortunately, I read the merge discussion on Wikidata first and I didn't immediately realise what had happened. Then I saw you message here and started looking for problems in an empty category. On reflection, this is my fault not yours, so I am sorry for that.

It is two years or more since I created the Welsh Landscape Collection Wikidata items but I remember some problems with the metadata and image not matching at the handle location - in these instances, I used the Handle ID (P1184) for the correct metadata and therefore the image will appear to be incorrect. It is also possible there are actual errors on Wikidata - it is likely to require some research to sort this out.

Do you know if after a work by (P1877) is mapped to any Commons templates? A lot of these files still have unstructured data in the artist field - removing the string will import the creator (P170) from Wikidata but information will be lost if the P1877 value isn't imported too. Simon, I did some Wikidata queries and compared them with data on Commons and most files seem to look fine, but I have in User:Jarekt/a files where something is off, image in P18 does not match the handle or something else is wrong. Map of French départements[edit]

Hi,

I just notice that you created map like Data:Morbihan.map (and apparently all european French départements), that wonderful ! THANK YOU A LOT !!

As I'm a perfectionist, I have some remarks/questions :

maybe we can a better naming pattern, including the source, maybe something like Data:Natural Earth Admin1/Morbihan.map?
could we add categories?
should I delete Data:France/Departement/56.map (I created only 4 départements, by hand as the source wasn't in GeoJSON, it's more detailed but I probably won't do the other départements and it needs a better naming too)
would it be possible to have other map, for instance of communes of France?

If we are changing the name format, I think something like your Data:France/Departement/56.map works well. This is not something have a strong opinion about and, if you want to rename them, please do so. For me, the most important things are the link to Wikidata and the ability to use the geoshapes in SPARQL queries. But, please let me know if you change the format so I can follow it when making more geoshapes.

We are not using categories on the .map or .tab datatypes - I cannot remember if there is a reason or not. It would make sense to add categories. Maybe we should start adding categories?

I have an AWB workflow for creating geoshapes from geoJSON (converted into CSV), which I can share with you if you want to create more maps. I want to create Admin 1 for every country from the Natural Earth dataset but I don't get much time to work on it.

Do you think a geoshape workshop would be a good Celtic Knot session?

I'll think a bit more about the name format but I'm guessing we need names as unique as possible. France/Departement/56 can be the name of both Data:France/Departement/56.map or Data:Morbihan.map, that's why the source should maybe included in the name (or not, to be continued...).

Please add categories to your uploads, otherwise they just end up in a huge, delayed bucket for someone to sort out later. Even Category:Penryn, Cornwall is better than nothing, because there's no guarantee that anyone is yet interested enough in Wikidata to marry the two together. Thanks. Hi Kolforn, after uploading a batch of photos I use AutoWikiBrowser to add the date, category, my name as author and change the license to CC0 - it is not really necessary for you to add the date and location. Your edits were not incorrect but I would prefer the date metadata contains only a date and not 'Taken on...', which is the reason I edited it. Thanks for your efforts though. Hi Simon, I have been working through some V&A photographs that you uploaded, and I have spotted an error in their metadata. Do you have a contact there I can pass this back to? Your opinion about OpenRefine and its Wikimedia Commons features: two (!) surveys[edit]

Hi! You have recently tried/used Wikimedia Commons features in OpenRefine (uploading files, or editing existing files). I'm curious to hear how this has gone, also if you only briefly tried these features.

To help the OpenRefine team with future improvements, it would be immensely helpful if you would be willing to spend a bit of time filling in two surveys. (Yes, two! Each of them uses a different method and (open source) platform).

A first, classical, survey (fully anonymous) where you can tell us how you use the Commons features in OpenRefine, and how you (want to) learn to use them better;
A second, more experimental survey (also fully anonymous) in which you prioritize the features that matter most to you. This second survey is a bit strange in that you can 'just keep clicking'. Feel free to use it as long or as briefly as you want; you can stop any time. Please also add your own suggestions!
