STORY OF ONE HUNDRED YEARS. 51 battle was followed by the convention of Cintra, which led to the evacu-ation of Portugal by the French forces. VICTORIES OF NAPOLEON. Great was the mortification of Napoleon at this inauspicious be-ginning of the Peninsular war, and he deemed it necessary to take thefield in person. Collecting his troops with the greatest rapidity, in theearly part of November he was in the north of Spain at the head of180,000 men. He at once communicated his own energy to theoperations of the army ; the Spaniards were severely defeated at Rey-nosa, Burgos and Tudela, and on the 4th of December Napoleon forcedan entrance into the capital. The British troops, who were marching tothe assistance of the Spaniards, were driven back upon Corunna, andbeing there attacked while making preparations to embark, they com-pelled the enemy to retire, but their brave commander, Sir John Moore,was mortally wounded.
