Joanplayed with her brothers and sisters ina large forest near her home. She likedto listen to the wind among the trees,and she loved the little wild birds andbeasts. The birds and beasts loved Joan too.They would come to her when she calledthem. Joan was a good girl. She helped hermother to keep the house tidy, and tospin and sew. Sometimes she went intothe fields to mind the sheep. Those were sad days for France, forthere was fighting in the land. TheEnglish soldiers were there, and they hadbeaten the French soldiers in manybattles. 72

JOAN RIDING TO BATTLE The French prince was not a brave nora wise man. He was afraid of his foes,and did little to help his own people. Some of the poor wounded soldiers ofFrance came to the village where Joanlived. Then the young girl gave up herbed to the sick men, and helped hermother to nurse them. Her heartwas full of pity for the fair land ofFrance. One day Joan heard a voice w^hich toldher to go and help her country. Shethought it was an angels voice. But atfirst she did not go. How can a younggirl like me help France? she said. Then the voice spoke to her again andagain, and each time it told her to go andhelp the French prince. At last Joan made up her mind to go,for she was sure that God had sent anangel to speak to her. The young girls friends laughed. How can you help the prince? they 75 cried.
