In ten days she had become so weak, thatthe priest came to her, and exhorted her to keepher mind from earthly things. She would notlisten, but cried after Sir Lancelot continually,and called her father and her brother Sir Tirreto her bedside. There she begged her brotherto write a letter, which she dictated to him. When I am dead, she said, and beforemy body is cold, let this letter be put in myright hand, and let me be dressed in my richestclothes, laid upon a fair bed, and driven in achariot to the Thames. There place me upon abarge covered with black samite, and let a dumbboatman steer me. Let all this be done, father,I beseech you. The maiden died the next day, and her wisheswere carried out, the dumb boatman steering theboat down the stream towards London.

128 THE FATE MAID OF ASTOLAT. When it had arrived opposite Westminster,King Arthur and Queen Guenevere, who hadwithdrawn into a window, spied it floating downthe river. The King summoned Sir Kay, andbade him bring the black barge to the shore,and he led the Queen to the riverside. They saw in the barge a fair woman lyingon a rich bed, her clothing of cloth of gold, andthey took from her hand the letter that lay there. Leaving a trusty man in charge of the boatwith its pitiful burden, they went to the Kingschamber, followed by the Knights who hadaccompanied them to the shore, for the Kingwished the letter to be read openly. He then broke the seal, and bade a clerkread it. ISToble Knight, Sir Lancelot, it ran, Iwhom men called the Fair Maid of Astolat, lovedthee beyond recall: therefore unto all ladies Imake moan ; pray for my soul, and bury me. Prayfor my soul. Sir Lancelot, as thou art peerless. Here the letter ended, and the King andQueen, and all the Knights there wept whenthey hear
