En una cuenca sedimentaria, en este caso la Cuenca de Madrid, se van depositando a lo largo de millones de años arenas, gravas, arcillas y otros restos. Todo este material procede de las montañas que rodean la cuenca. El lento pero implacable efecto de la lluvia y el viento, con ayuda de otros fenómenos geológicos, van depositando lentamente los materiales en forma de capas. Los diferentes tonos de cada estrato se corresponden con diferentes condiciones climáticas. Cuanto más abajo se hallan, más antiguos son los sedimentos. En canteras como esta se extraen los materiales para utilizarlos en la construcción, dejando al descubierto millones de años de historia de la Tierra. |
