Au début de la conquête espagnole du Mexique, avant que les instructeurs religieux n'aient appris les langues des peuples indigènes, ils utilisèrent des histoires en images décrivant les enseignements de base pour diffuser l'évangile chrétien. Ces catéchismes furent appelés Testerians, d'après Père Jacobo de Testera, un prêtre franciscain qui fut l'initiateur de cette méthode d'enseignement.

In the early period of the Spanish conquest of Mexico, before religious instructors had learned the languages of the indigenous peoples, they used pictorial stories describing basic teachings to spread the Christian Gospel. These catechisms were called Testerians, after Father Jacobo de Testera, a Franciscan priest who pioneered this method of teaching.

Estos se llamaban catecismos testerianos, en honor al padre Jacobo de Testera, un sacerdote franciscano que fue pionero en este método de enseñanza.
