Summary[edit]

Description
English: Thames Landing at 2 State Street in New London, Connecticut was first built as a wooden structure in 1844, used for candle-making by Judge Elias Perkins and Captain Franklin Smith. The building had a wharf connected to it directly into the harbor (the land currently between the building and the river is landfill added at a later date). Perkins and Smith branched out into whaling, importing and, possibly, smuggling. After the decline of whaling, the building was taken over by the New Haven-New London Railroad, and during the Civil War, Western Union and an express company occupied the ground floor, while lodging for railroad workers was located upstairs. In 1888, the building was renovated into the Winthrop Hotel, and since the 1930s popular restaurants have been located there, except for a short time in the mid-20th century. Popular legend has it that the hotel was a brothel during World War II.

The building is part of the Downtown New London Historic District.
