Russiawould not assent to formally recognize the right ofEnglish ships freely to navigate those seas, unlessthe boundary question was also arranged, and settledso as to insure to Russia an unbroken lisiere fromthe Portland Canal up to Mount Saint Elias. Andon this last point, England, after a long and stub-born resistance, finally yielded. Much of the trouble that the negotiators of theAnglo-Muscovite treaty of 1825 had in agreeingupon the eastern boundary of the lisiere was dueto a lack of knowledge respecting the mountainsalong the northwest American coast.
