Description
English: The Alps are the largest mountain range in Europe, stretching in a long crescent from the Mediterranean coasts of Italy and France to Vienna, Austria. The mountain range runs about 600 miles (956 km) long and from 140 to 80 miles (225 to 129 km wide). The towering mountains form an impressive barrier separating the lowlands of France and Germany, in the north, from northern Italy’s Po Valley. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Terra satellite captured a true-color image of the Alps and northern Italy on December 23, 2016. Snow sits atop the tall peaks of the Alps while low clouds (fog) sits over parts of the Po Valley and stretches over the Adriatic Sea.
