Many of these had to do, as they must every-where, with visits to famous houses, with which New Eng-land is abundantly supplied. Cambridge is just across the Charles River from Boston.There is much of interest there besides the great Universitythat has made it world-famous. There is the elm under whichWashington took command of the Continental army, andRevolutionary markers are dotted all over the green. Thereis the cemetery where an entire era of American literature isburied. And there are the famous old houses, among which isElmwood, the birthplace and home of James Russell Lowell,but easily the greatest of them is the house in which Long-fellow lived and died. A fortunate chance brought me to this house at the veryhour of opening, on Saturday, for the public are only admittedduring two hours every week. In response to our ring, the great door swungopen on its massive hinges and an agreeable proprietress wel-comed us into the sacred precincts. It is a most charming in-terior. The first thing that strikes the sight is the windingstairway, and there, on a landing a few steps up, is a tall clockthat at once brings to mind Longfellows poem, The Old Clockon the Stairs. It seems that universal fitness requires thatthere should always be a clock on these stairs. At the right isthe poets study, just as he left it. Here are all his writingaccessories—the inkstands, the blotting pad and the manytrifles that made his desk his own. Here, too, are portraits ofthe friends that he valued and welcomed into his life. TheSpreading Chestnut Tree has sent its contribution in theform of a memento, while the masters chair still waits besidethe fire for him who occupies
