yfrom it are the aorta, pulmonary vessels, artery, and vein, and the vena cava. Between theauricles and ventricles are valves,— the mitralbetween the left auricle and left ventricle; thetricuspid corresponding on the right side; andthe pulmonary and aortic valves. Starting withthe spent blood that is collected from the entirebody in the veins, this is carried, by pressure ofthe walls of the veins, through the vena cava, and emptied into the right auricle; this con-tracts, the valve at the orifice of the vena cavacloses, the tricuspid valve opens, and the bloodis forced into the right ventricle. It remainshere a small fraction of a second, and this ven-tricle contracts, the tricuspid valve closes, andthe blood is forced through the pulmonaryartery into the lungs. Here it is spread out.mesh-like, in millions of capillaries, is oxy-genated, and brought back to the left auricle bythe pulmonary vein. The contraction of theleft auricle forces the blood into the left ven- CIRCULATORY SYSTEM.

(The red lines show arteries; the blue, veins.)1. General Circulation in the Human Body. 2. The Heart, showing Interior. 3. Cross-Section of the Heart, seen from above. 4. Circulation of Blcod in the Lungs S. Circulation of Blood in Digestive Tract. CIRCULATION IN PLANTS — CIRCUMCISION tricle through the mitral orifice, the valves be-hind closing, and finally the great throb of theheart is caused by the ventricular systole, themitral valve closes tight, preventing regurgita-tion, and the blood bounds out into the arteries, the aortic semilunar valves closing as soon asthe ventricle commences to expand to get itsnext supply. Thus this cycle goes on 72 timesa minute on the average, night and day, untildeath quiets the hearts action. In actual oper-ation the right and left sides are working simul-taneously, and when one listens to the heart-beat one hears only the lub-dup, lub-dup,of the closing auriculo-ventricular valves, andthe closing aortic and pulmonary tricuspids. From the arterie
