the ways and practices of its ministers; the second parttells of its first entrance into China, and of the patronageextended to it for the most part for nearly one hundred andfifty years by various Emperors ; in the third part, to which,though it be the shortest, the two other are introductory,the Christians express, in verse, their praise of God andtheir religion, and also of the Emperors whose protectionand favour they had enjoyed. Another most interesting and less known record is anancient Arabic manuscript written in the year of the Hegira569, or A.D. 1173, in which are given some most interestingaccounts of some early Arab travellers in China, dated a.d.851 and 878 respectively.^ Mission work in this province was commenced by theChina Inland Mission in 1876, the first party of mission-aries, Messrs. F. W, Bailer and George King, reachingHingan Fu in September of that year, while the capitalwas reached by another party, Messrs. King, Budd Easton, ^ Dr. Moir Duncan. ^ See Appendix.

Montagu Bvauchantp. The Nestorian Tablet. This famous Tablet, discovered at Sian Fu, the capital of Shensi, records the arrival at that city, then thecapital of the Empire, of the Nestorian Priest Olopun from Syria with tlie true sacred books, iu a.d. ti35. It-states the main points of Nestorian teaching, and that the sacred books were translated in the Imperiallibrary. The Tablet was erected a.d. 781, and gives a brief summary of the Nestorian Christians in China fromA.D. 63.J to that date, nearly l.iO years. The inscription is in Chinese and the Estrangelo Syrian characters. To face page 202. THE PEOVINCE OF SHENSI 203 and Parker, on 21st December, a few months later. Thefirst journey had been made by water from Hankow, thelatter part of the second jomrney over rough mountainroads, of which Mr. King wrote: After very roughjourneyings over roads which, I should think, would havebroken Mr. Macadams heart, we arrived at the capitalof Shensi.
