The splendour of thoseorgans in the majority of butterflies, and in some moths,is sometimes equally shared by both sexes, but moreusually the females are less conspicuously coloured thanthe males. This diSerence, amounting often to totaldissimilarity, Darwin, in accordance with hiS descent-theory, attributes in great part to the action of sexnalselection. Several males, he says, may be seen pursu-ing the same female. The latter he supposes selects themost gaily-coloured, and thus the plainer coloured rualeshave been gradually eliminated ; but there is no proofwhatever that the female shows any such discriminationin selecting a mate, while many known facts seem to pointin an opposite direction. Mr A. R.
