Among them was Blanco. They wereall taken to the provincial jail and locked up, a strongguard being placed over the jail. When everything had quieted down, it was al-most dark and arrangements were begun for the night.Company B was detailed as guard in the to\vn and theother companies were stationed as outposts on thenorth and west sides of the city. The Third Illinoistook charge of the other approaches. The men thatwere left were permitted to camp for the night where-ever they chose and some pitched their tents in thestreet, others in the public buildings and others in theplaza. Most of the shelter tents and other baggagewas discarded in the advance on the city so that manyof the men were compelled to seek shelter underroofs or sleep in the open air.
