Fig. 15.—THE FLOWER GARDEN AT CLIVEDEN, AS SEEN FROM THE TERRACE FRONT. (SEE P. 6g.) will be sent to India as soon as the state of theweather permits. The stock of Castilloa elastica, brought last yearto Kew by Mr. Cross, has been propagated asrapidly as possible, and plants have already been dis-tributed to Africa (West Coast), Ceylon, and Java.Dr. Thwaites reports that of thirty-one plants trans-mitted to him twenty-eight have arrived in perfecthealth, and have thriven vigorously. A plant to which I alluded in my last report, and which is to be found in some Continental andEnglish gardens under the name of Castilloa elas-tica, proves under cultivation at Kew (although pos-sibly a species of Castilloa) to be certainly distinctfrom that plant both in the form of the leaves andin the habit. Along with the Heveas Mr. Cross brought seedsand plants of an undescribed Rubber tree, which fur-nishes the *Ceaia scrap of the English market. The export of this has been reckoned at one Forestry.
