Besides those already mentioned as lend-ing me much assistance on the occasionof my visit, I have to thank the Hon. Lady parts of the flower, reduced to minimumdimensions as they are, do not contradict theirsystematical position. Burlingtonias, generallyspeaking, do not range among the great Orchids,the best of them being medium-sized, but makinga tolerable effect when arranged a dozen bulbsor more in a pot. The little plant now inquestion seems to have a very clear conscienceof its smallness, and forms dense tufts in theway of the smaller Masdevallias, as the onlychance of not being overlooked. Nevertheless, a,Burlingtonia scarcely 1 inch in height is verydifficult to be seen, and this is why the plant hasbeen overlooked for so long, even in the neigh-bourhood of Campinas, a well-known Coffee-

(SEE P. 17.) many gardens, but the fiaest one I haveseen is that along one side of the kitchengarden at Rousdon — a thick, compact,healthy green hedge between 4 and 5 feethigh, and 300 feet long. Nor is this the onlyhedge worth noting, for in another part ofthe gardens is one equally well grown ofabout the same height, and of grsat length,entirely of Escallonia macrantha, which wasbeautifully in flower at the time of myvisit; and still again another hedge, ofCotoncaster microphylla, which droops overa 4-feet wall on to the main road on each sideof the lodge gates. The garden also pos-sesses two pergolas: one of these, about500 feet long, is chiefly covered with Cotone-aster Nummularia, which was intended tobe used entirely, but the plant, it is said,was found to have an injurious effect upon Peek for courteously giving mo permissionto view the grounds.
