(SEE P. 17.) many gardens, but the fiaest one I haveseen is that along one side of the kitchengarden at Rousdon — a thick, compact,healthy green hedge between 4 and 5 feethigh, and 300 feet long. Nor is this the onlyhedge worth noting, for in another part ofthe gardens is one equally well grown ofabout the same height, and of grsat length,entirely of Escallonia macrantha, which wasbeautifully in flower at the time of myvisit; and still again another hedge, ofCotoncaster microphylla, which droops overa 4-feet wall on to the main road on each sideof the lodge gates. The garden also pos-sesses two pergolas: one of these, about500 feet long, is chiefly covered with Cotone-aster Nummularia, which was intended tobe used entirely, but the plant, it is said,was found to have an injurious effect upon Peek for courteously giving mo permissionto view the grounds.
