ANNUAL RINGS IN TIMBER.I thought the editorial note appended to H. J. C.s letter, May 2, suggested the ex-planation asked for on this subject. Examples-like that sent by H. J. C, are the rule ratherthan the exception. Trees, especially hardwoods, produce the most and the biggest branches on.the side where there is most light and shelter.,and consequently, lay on most timber on thatside in the shape of broader rings which rundown the trunk on the branched side, and extendinto the roots. And this applies to limbs as wellto trunks. There would, no doubt, be mostbranches on the upper side of the limb referredto by H. J. C. I have anordinary old Oakstump in my garden, out from the bottom of thetree, close to the ground. In shape the bottomsection is like a rough triangle with the cornersrounded off, and the pith ring is about 2; inches•from the bark at one corner, and about 7 and10 inches respectively from the other two corners. The two main projections, or corners, were•caused by two big roots at the base of the treeand projecting above ground, and these rootswere produced by corresponding limbs growing.above on the same side of the tree. The ringsare the same in number all round, but much•broader on the bulging sides, and ■ they arenot circular but triangular in shape, especi-ally near the outside. The common Thornmanifests a strong tendency to be one sided.I have seen a thick rope - like ligature run-ning down
