Text Appearing Before Image:
as before. Trained in thismanner, little difficulty is experienced in growing;the other ordinary occupants of the houses, andslight shade afforded by the Eose-shoots aresometimes more an advantage than otherwise. That it can be cultivated with success upon itsown roots some cultivators would consider anadvantage, and cuttings of matured shoots root-freely, with the result that Briar suckers andprobable decay at the point of union are therebyavoided. The large quantity of chalk in the soil at-Lockinge may be considered by some as con-tributing to success in Eose-growing. Yet upoBa general look round the gardens in this neigh-bourhood, one finds the greater portion of the*Eose family in anything but a flourishing con-dition, the plants being devoid of vigour. Hear-ing, as I often do, of failures in Eose-culture, Iam forced to the belief that in the training andpruning must lie the principal cause of failure.Wfn. Fyfc, (jr., Lockinge, Wantage. m Fig. 75.—bouquet op transvaal orchids presented to mrp. chamberlain at Johannesburg, andarranged by mr. fuchs, rand nursery, johannesburg. (SEE P. 180.) 1180 THE GARDENERS1 CHRONICLE. (Mabch 21, 1903. TRANSVAAL OECHIDS. Our knowledge of the Orchids of Cape Colonyand of Natal is much more complete than in theease of those of the Transvaal; and accordinglyit is with pleasure that we avail ourselves of theopportunity of illustrating a bouquet (see fig. 75),largely composed of those flowers, which was madeby Mr. H. Fuchs, Rand Nursery, Johannesburg, for presentation to Mrs. Chamberlain, when theRight Hon. Joseph Chamberlain visited the Golden City. The letter of Mr. Mainwaring, manager at the Rand Nursery, informs us thatthe groundwork of the bouquet was of Violets,Smilax, and Fern-fronds, but Transvaal Orchidsformed the chief feature. The names of thekinds used are not given, but they are mostprobably varieties of Eulophia Dregeana, E. en-sata, and other of the chain-tubered Eulophias,
