DAKOTA. 241 the three divisions. South-eastern Dakota has had a very large increaseof population. I am told by persons in whom I have confidence that asmany as three hundred teams, immigrant wagons, have passed into thesouth-eastern part of the Territory daily through the summer. Quite aslarge a percentage has come into Northern Dakota. The same may besaid of the increase in the Black Hills. In the absence of census returnsit is impossible to state with accuracy our present population. The swell-ing tide of immigration spread over so vast a territory, much of it inunorganized counties, makes satisfactory estimates difficult if not impos-sible. Well-informed persons have estimated our population at 160,000,others at 170,000, and some as high as 180,000. At the present time Ithink it is at least 150,000, probably more than that. The immigrationto the Black Hills has been large and of a very satisfactory character.They claim to have—and I think with good reason—from 25,000 to30,000 i
