All the long line of barges thatnow leave the Hudson at Spuyten Duyvil, was formerly com-pelled to double the battery and fairly blocked the way ofthe great steamship lines. This obstruction will be less andless as wharf accommodations are found for other branches ofindustry. But more than all this, we are now in a position to offerto all the varied industries of the country, facilities that can-not be found elsewhere. Materials and skilled labor for manu-facturing purposes are more readily and more cheaply obtainedat tide water and in the vicinity of large populations thananywhere else. The powerful influences of the inventive genius of the age,new forms of industry, new adaptations of motive power andlabor saving conceptions of every kind are constantly beingevolved.
