hich rises over thecentre of the transept. It is 200 feet high and about 35 feet square. The transeptfronts on the north and south are each flanked by two subordinate towers, thetwo on the west containing rooms about 24 feet square, some accessory to thedining-hall, and others for the use of the Board of Overseers. The two on theeast contain the staircases and passages leading to the theatre. The transept fronts contain the main entrances to the building, each being awide arched doorway in a carved stone screen containing niches, and crownedwith an open parapet; over the parapet on each front is a large stone tracerywindow filled with stained glass. In the gables above are dedicatory inscriptionsas follows: — On the south front: MEMORIAE • EORVM • QUI • IN • HIS • SEDIBUS • INSTITVTI • MORTEM • PRO • PATRIA • OPPETIVERVNT CI3-D-CCC1XI CIDD-CCC-J.X-V On the north front: VT • VIRTVTIS • EXEMPLA- SEMPER • APVD VOS • VIGEAT- SODALES • AMICIQUE • POSVERVNT

MEMORIAL HALL. 61 These doorways open into the memorial vestibule in the centre of the build-ing. This hall is thirty feet wide, and a hundred and twelve feet long. It ispaved with marble, and is covered by a wooden vaulting of brown ash, at aheight of fifty-eight feet. The walls are occupied to the height of eighteen feetby a carved black-walnut screen in the form of an arcade; the arches, twenty-eio-ht in number, contain each a marble tablet surmounted by a mosaic or inlay ofmarbles. On these tablets are inscribed the names of the graduates or studentsof the College and of the professional schools who fell in defence of the Unionin the late civil war, with the date of their death and the place of death of thosewho died in battle. The following is a complete list of the names as inscribed,beginning at the right of the central entrance to the dining-hall: — JAMES SAMUEL WADSWORTH.8 MAY, 1864.
