While making observation inprofile it is requisite to note that the))ranches of the lower jaw shouldbe broad and deep, since they giveattachment both within and withoutto the most powerful of the musclesof mastication. Moreover, viewedfrom behind they should be set wellapart and clear of the neck, so thatthe larynx or upper portion of thewindpipe, which is situated betweenthem, as well as the pllar^■nx or throat, may have ample space in whichto move while the head is being bent, or turned sharply from side toside. Undue narrowness of this region, when occurring in horses with short,fleshy necks, tends to emltarrass breathing, especially when the animal istightly reined up.
