ct the forward movement of the body. It will l:)e noticed later that the weioht borne bv the front limbsexceeds that sustained by the hind ones, and in addition to this theyhave also to receive and disperse the forcible impact from behind whichis imposed upon them in racing and jumping, and in a less degreein the slower paces. Their ability to meet these requirements isexplained by the peculiar manner of their attachment to the trunk. This, as we have seen, is effected by muscles only, which permit theweight and propulsive force to fall upon the passive organs of locomotion—bones, tendons, and ligaments—without exciting that violent reactionwhich would necessarily result had the scapula a fixed articulation withthe trunk, such as exists between the pelvis and the thigh-bone. It will be seen, therefore, that besides being organs of support, the fore-limbs are specially designed to break and disperse the concussion to whichthey are exposed in the more energetic movements of the body.

E, Headof femur. 68 CONFORMATION AND ITS DEFECTS As organs of propulsion they exercise but slight influence as comparedwith the hind - limbs. Their greatest efforts in this connection aredeveloped in heavy draught (fig. 51), when the body strongly in-clined forward gives the foredegs an oblique direction backward, which permits them to jjushagainst the collar towhich the shouldersare energetically ap-plied. It is by theextension or openingout of all the articu-lar angles previouslysemi-flexed that thefore-limbs are able toaccomplish this result. When they are di-rected obliquely andin an inverse direc-tion, as is seen some-times at the begin-ning of the effort of traction, the force wdiich they exercise upon the trunk, and therefore against the collar, is at its minimum. Traction forward canbe favourably executed only when the foot directed b
