Captain Porter, in the meantime, with his mortar vessels shelled Fort Jackson, whose resistance was broken on the 28th of April, on which day the Confederate commander communicated his willingness to capitulate. The capitulation was signed on the following day. On the 28th of April New Orleans surrendered. The Union fleet lost in this famous engagement one ship, the gunboat Varuna, 35 men killed and 128 men wounded. The ships which suffered most were the Pensacola, 37; Brooklyn, 35, and Iroquois 28. As to individual experience in this memorable action we have a graphic account by an eye-witness and combatant, Gunner Cornelius Cronin, then one of the crew of the Brooklyn.
