There are three sav-ings banks, two national gold banks, four lines ofhorse-cars, three flouring and four planing mills,an iron and a brass foundry, two potteries, onepatent marble works, a jute bag factory, threetanneries and other establishments employingmany mechanics. On the public schools, ofwhich Oakland is justly very proud, nearly16,000 are monthly expended, and nearly aquarter of a million dollars value in property isowned by the department. The State Univer-sity is within the city limits. Its site, which hasbeen named Berkley, is on the northern borderof the city and has a direct ferry to San Fran-cisco, and many families are planting themselvesthere, attracted by its natural beauty and the ed-ucational and social advantages which clusteraround it. The University is open to studentsof both sexes, and tuition is free. The numberof students exceeds 200. By special law, the 260 TME ^m€IFI€ WQWMSBW.

Lake Meriitt,a beautiful sheet of water,Tubbs Hotel and the GrandCentral Hotel, both spaciousand admirably kept, areamong the attractions whichnone fail to visit, and withwhich thousands have bright/-t and happy memories associa-ted. Though incorporated as acity, Oakland is thoroughlyrural. A very small portionof the business part aroundthe chief railroad station isbuilt up solidly, but every-where else the houses standdetached and usually sur-rounded by a liberal expanseof gardens,
