lts. Some no less important reports were published by the sameobserver in the succeeding issue of the Comptes Bendus (Decem-ber 28). In one case the whole left lung was obscured. Thisappearance was attributed either to pleurisy with effusion, or togeneral tuberculosis of the left lung. On further examination itwas noted that the mediastinum was not pushed to the right. Bya process of exclusion, therefore, the diagnosis of tubercle of thewhole left lung was arrived at. In another case, on the left ofthe spinal column in a little girl, was demonstrated a tumour, dueto adenoma of bronchial glands. In a third patient, a darkshadow on the right side of the chest, continuous with that ofthe sternum, was shown to be due to a transposed heart. Owingto the hearts impulse being on the right side, the presence ofaneurism had been suspected. Bergoine has repeated and confirmed the above observations.* At the Medical Club in Vienna, in January, 1897, ProfessorWasserman showed two cases that he had diagnosed by theEontgen rays. The first was a case of phthisis in the right lung,where the cavernous signs could not be elicited by percussion andauscultation. Under the rays the left side of the chest appearedclear and healthy, while the right exhibited diffuse shadowsrepresenting infiltration; in one place a clear area, which to allappearance corresponded to a cavity, was brought out by thetube when applied either in front of or behind the right lung.
