THE SEAMANS DRESS 353 down collar, the coats to be lined, but not edged, with white.The midshipmans coat was always marked by a white turn-back to the stand-up collar, precisely what has been knownas the midshipmans patch ever since. White cloth waist-coats and breeches were prescribed with all these dresses, butthey were more commonly made of kerseymere or nankin, andwere buff rather than white.^ All officers wore three-corneredcocked hats, but in 1799 a distinction was made between flagofficers and others in the method of wearing the hat, theformer wearing it athwartships, while the latter wore it foreand aft. The difficulty of wearing a three-cornered hat foreand aft quickly brought about an alteration in its shape, andby 1805 the hats worn were almost exactly the same as thosewhich may be seen on the Lord Mayors coachman and foot-men.
