m or scaffold, probably about two feet wide, extendedalong the walls about three or four feet from the ground andbelow this near the floor was a second platform. Before abath was to be taken the fireplace was heated to its utmostcapacity. The bathers entered, undressed, and crawled upon the second balcony to perspire. In order to increase theheat and cause heavy perspiration water was poured upon thered hot stones by the bathing-woman, who looked after thebath house.^^ When the heat became too intense the bathersmoved down below to the first platform. In the meantime theystruck their bodies with bundles of small birch branches or theywere scrubbed by the bathing-woman.
