pleased with my interest and the seemingfamiliarity with which I handled dates, contests and person-alities of the war period, the more so from my residence hav-ing been outside of the belligerent district, but his surpriseabated somewhat when I revealed my objective point, andthat I had so been absorbed in war records as to have writtenafter puerile fashion quite a history. As much time wasspent at the rear car window and in standing on the platform,catching every opportunity offered for inspection, and beingbetter acquainted with the Pennsylvania system than any other,a comparison with it became natural but strikingly sad. Heregrass often occurred between the tracks almost to their con-cealment, and at times we ran so slow as to reveal portions oftrack badly worn—from my viewpoint absolutely unsafe.
