ohemian existence are epitomized with a gooddeal of power. The picture by Claus Meyer, called Three Catsand Three Kittens, is excellent. Again one feelsthe Dutch influence, and this time it is De Hoochand Vermeer of Delft who live again! The womenin this picture are in old German costumes, andthe composition is charming and effective. ClausMeyer painted chiefly in Munich, though Hanoverwas his native place. Diezs study of wounded soldiers and a march-ing army is dramatic and interesting. Diez isquite Dutch in his feeling, and one sees influencesof all the great leaders of the Netherlands in histouch. Diirer and Rembrandt, Teniers and Brou-wer, all are reincarnated and modernized in hiswork. He was by birth a native of Bayreuth, andbecame professor in the Academy of Munich. /IDo&ern German /iDasters 387 painter, who renders charming effects in semi-historic style. His May Day shows a family partyof the seventeenth century, and is very attractivein its way. The general atmosphere is that of aWatteau, — graceful, dainty, and decorative. Heis somewhat eclectic, instead of being strictly orig-inal, but the results are very satisfactory. He culls,but he culls with remarkable success, from the bestworks of all times; and his pictures are often posi-tively educational. The painters of the Munich school developedvarious processes; they revived fresco, and theytried the use of wax medium. Another process,employed a good deal by Piloty and Kaulbach, wasthe use of a medium called wasser glas, some-times alluded to as liquid flint. This is a partic-ularly permanent medium in wall decoration, andis no more difficult to use than more perishablefresco.
