In other respects also theirvery occupations induce lowliness, and admit not of vainglory.For who, let me ask, will have ambitious designs, who isengaged in digging the ground, in watering and planting, inmaking baskets, and weaving sackcloth, and other like employ-ments ? Who is there that will be infected by this malady whiledwelling with poverty and wrestling with hunger ? On this ac-count then the practice of humility is easy to them; and as hereto be lowly-minded is difficult, on account of the multitudes ofthose that applaud and admire; it becomes there a matter ofgreat facility. His attention is there turned to the wilderness,where he beholdeth the birds flying, and the movements of thetrees, and the breathing of the zephyr, and the torrents bornedown the ravines.
