EDITORS INTRODUCTION One of the most gratifying features of recent years has been the remarkablechange in the attitude of public opinion towards matters of antiquarian interest,and particularly towards that branch of archaeological research which finds an outletfor its labours in the ancient monuments that lie scattered throughout the wholeof Scotland in rich abundance. Not only has this interest exhibited a surprisingdegree of growth, but the feeling of sympathy for all that remains to us ot the effortsof a bygone age which lies at the root of that interest has permeated through everyrank of the community. But public opinion has developed more then a mereacademic interest in the antiquities of Scotland. It has moved the government totake a step within the present year which must have very important results in thefuture. A Royal Commission has been appointed for the purpose of cataloguingand reporting upon the present condition of our national memorials. While it hasnot been investedbaronialecclesia00bill
