Text Appearing Before Image:
whichthe chestnut of the head and cheeks somewhat abruptly merges ; the back, scapularies, and flanks rayedalternately with irregular zigzag bars of black and white ; breast and under surface yellowish white, the formerornamented with round spots of black ; wing-coverts Vown ; speculum glossy green, deepening at the sidesinto velvet black ; quills brownish black ; under tail-coverts buff, with a longitudinal band of black ; billblack ; irides brown ; legs blackish brown. During the months of July and August, the male loses his finelycontrasted plumage, and assumes that of the female, from which at this time he is not easily distinguished. The female differs considerably, having the top of the head Sienna yellow, with dashes of deep brown ;throat and cheeks dusky white spotted with brown ; upper parts dull brown, each feather having a lighterborder ; under parts yellowish white; speculum green. We have figured a male and female in the adult colouring, rather less than the natural size.
Text Appearing After Image:
£ K^ Hi BIMACULATED TEAL. Anas glocitans, Linn.Querquedula glocitans, Vigors. The Bimaculated Teal is so named from the two large spots of brown on the face and neck : we believe, how-ever, that these brown markings vary in the depth of their colour at difFerent seasons; at least we find such to bethe case in an allied species from China, Querquedula for mosa, of which examples are now living in the Gardensof the Zoological Society, and which possess marks of a similar character; these at opposite seasons are ofa very different colour, changing from rich brown to light tawny grey. We are not aware of the existence ofmale and female examples of this very rare species in any collection, either public or private, except those inthe Museum of the Zoological Society of London, to which they were presented with the rest of his finecollection by N. A. Vigors, Esq. These were taken in a decoy in the year 1812; and it is also recorded thata male was taken in a similar manner in 1771, as descr
