Text Appearing Before Image:
and 250 BLACK BEARDED BARBARIAN Mr. Jamieson and A Hoa sat down and pre-pared a statement of their losses. This theysent to the commander-in-chief of the Chi-nese forces, who had been responsible forlaw and order. Without any delay or ques-tioning of the missionaries rights, the gen-eral sent Dr. Mackay the sum asked for—ten thousand Mexican dollars.1 The next thing was to plan the new chap-els and see to the building of them. Andbefore the shouts of Long-tsong bo-khihad well started, they began to be contra-dicted by walls of brick or stone that roseup strong and sure to show that the missionhad not been wiped out. Three of the chap-els were commenced all at once—at Sin-tiam, at Bang-kah and at Sek-khau. Beforeanything was done Dr. Mackay and a partyof his students went up to Sin-tiam to lookover the site. They stood up on the pile ofruins, surrounded by the Christians, and acrowd of heathen came around gleefully towatch them in the hopes of seeing their de-spair. 1 About $5,000.
Text Appearing After Image:
Bang-kah Chapellook now, the chapel towers above our temple UNEXPECTED BOMBARDMENT 251 But to their amazement the little companyof Christians led by the wonderful KaiBok-su, suddenly burst into a hymn ofpraise to God who had brought them safelythrough all their troubles: Bless, O my soul, the Lord thy God, And not forgetful beOf all his gracious benefits He hath bestowed on thee! The heathen listened in wonder to thewords of praise where they had expected la-mentation, and they asked each other whatwas this strange power that made men sostrong and brave. And their amazement grew as the chapels, the lovely new chapels of stone or brick, be-gan to rise from the ruins of the old ones. And not only did the old ones reappear, newand more beautiful, but as Dr. Mackay andhis native preachers went here and thereover the country others peeped forth likethe hepaticas of springtime, until there werenot only the forty original chapels, but in afew years the number had increased to sixty. 252 BLACK
