343 344 GEORGE A. CUSTER. tribes, of the beauty of civilization, and its beneficial influenceupon them. The Modoc massacre was a cruel return for intended kind-ness. This tribe had for its chief Captain Jack, a very intelli-gent man of fine abilities. Their removal to another reservationwas violently resisted by them, and they retreated to the LavaBeds, where trouble was anticipated. At last a peace councilwas arranged for, and although Colonel Meacham, the peacecommissioner, urged the whites not to attend it, they paid noattention to his warning, but went. The Indians had concealedweapons, and they rose in a body, and attempted to massacreevery white man present. General Canby and Dr. Thomas werekilled, and Colonel Meacham received a dozen wounds, but sur-vived them. Three months afterward the band surrendered, andCaptain Jack and some of the other leaders were executed atFort Klamath, Oregon, October 3. Among the men who haddistinguished themselves in the Indian Wars was GEORGE A. C
