tout of white woollen, borderedwith gay colours, green Turkish trousers, and rein-deer skin boots, turning up at the toes after the man-ner of our fashionable gentlemen some centuries back.The head-dress is varied in colour, while its shapealmost defies description. Probably one of our cresteddragoon helmets, put on like a bonnet, that is, on theback instead of the top of the head, would give thebest idea of it. The dress of the men is very similar,with the exception, of course, of the bonnet, if wemust call it so, whose place is supplied by a red cap;both wear a knife in the girdle. This, w^e presume,was their holiday, as well as summer costume, put onfor the grand occasion of coming to town. Tobeauty of feature they have the sUghtest possible pre-tensions, at least according to our notions of beauty.Large mouths, little noses, Avith eyes (destitute ofeye-lashes) set slanting towards them, like those of acat, and high cheek-bones, make up faces that we ^should call excessively plain.

Only when a Lapp wishes to travelexpress, instead of harnessing the deer to hissledge, he fastens on his own feet an enormously longpair of skates, in which he glides over the frozen land,much quicker than his rein-deer either could or wouldtake him; for that intelligent animal will not permithimself to be driven beyond his strength. The sledgeis in shape not unlike a canoe, only square at the endwhere the traveller sits, instead of pointed; and it isconsidered to require no little dexterity to drive itwithout upsetting both sledge and cargo.
