Text Appearing Before Image:
the islandwere there, and all the vegetables, including yams, sweet - potatoes, cucumbers, and the hke. European wines took the place of the nativedrink, li,ava^ which is rapidly going out of use. Instead of plates, each of us had a pile of bread-fruit leaves whichserved as plates, and in front of each guest there were four half cocoa-nut-shells. One was full of drinking-water, the second full of milk, thethird contained chopped cocoanut, and the fourth sea-water. The sea-water was emptied into the chopped cocoanut to form a sauce like theChinese soy^ into which the various articles of food were dipped beforebeing conveyed to the mouth, and then the shell was fiUed with freshwater, and used as a finger-glass. We enjoyed the feast very much, though all of us confessed after-wards to a back-ache, from the novelty of our positions. After thefeast there was dancing in the spacious parlor of our host, and thefestivities were kept up until late in the evening. A SOUVENIR OF CAPTAIN COOK. 97
Text Appearing After Image:
98 THE BOY TRAVELLERS IN AUSTRALASIA. An excursion was made the next day to Point Venus, which has ahistoric interest, as it is the promontory where CajDtain Cook made theastronomical observations by which he determined the correct positionof the Society Islands. The name of the place commemorates his ob-servation of the transit of Venus which he and his scientific party madehere in 1769. It was a delightful ride along the Broom-road, as it is called, shadedby palm and bread-fruit trees, and through groves of oranges, citrons, guavas, bananas, and other tropical productions. Our friends inspectedthe light-house which is maintained here to direct the mariner approach-ing Papeiti, and Frank made a sketch of the tamarind-tree planted byCaptain Cook near the spot where he made the famous observations.
