us. Besides this thereare five triangular black marks, two of which are in thecell. The border of both wings consists of three moreor less distinct lines, the inner on the hind wings in theform of a shade. The apical portion of the borderon the fore wings is washed with lilac; and there is agray-blue bar at the anal angle. Hind wings have asubmarginal row of five black spots, the second andfifth pupilled with blue. Costa black. The under side of fore wings is red, except the apicalportion, which is marked as above. Hind wings marbledwith brownish black and white, with two large ocelli.The outer border is four black lines, with violet betweenthe two inner. The mature larva is 1.25 inches long, the body velvetyblack, between the joints four transverse lines of paleyellow alternating with narrow black lines. On eachjoint there are seven dark brown tubercles, from whicharise short, branching, black spines. On joints 6 to 12in the subdorsal region arf» large shining white spots. platp: v.

Head bilobed, black, sparselyclothed with gray hairs. Between joints 12 and 13 is alarge whitish patch crossed by a fine black line. Belowthe stigmata are two yellow lines, the lower interrupted,both spotted with black. The chrysalis is yellowish, moderately angular; head-case bifid, slightly projecting, and edged with brownabove; thoracic projection forming an obtuse angle;dorsal spines minute, of nearly uniform size, brown-tipped ; segments with rows of brown dots, and also ofbrownish markings. The food-plants are Gnaphalium polycephalurrij Arte-misia Imdoviciana. and probably other allied species. United States generally.
