Judge Tourgee was in my opinion the most brilliant carpet-bagger who found fame and fortune in the ruined South. Inmanv ways he was a remarkable man. His death was decreedby the Ku KInx Klan for the part he look in persuadingGovernor Holden to suspend the writ of Habeas Corpus inNorth Carolina.
