Text Appearing Before Image:
ther Greek whomI have met, stands out alone among public men inhis country, because he is primarily a statesman ratherthan a politician. Recognising the wider interests ofHellenism, he has always played the role of a Roides Hellenes, the title especially conferred upon thelate King George by the Protecting Powers at thetime of his election to the Greek throne in the year1863. A patriot above and before everything else. His Excellency, who has constantly demonstratedhis entire loyalty to the dynasty, was therefore readyto try to work with King Constantine as he had donewith his father. It was with this object in view that, until the time of his first dismissal in March, 1915,the leader of the Liberal Party, which voiced Imperial-ism rather than Parochialism, always disguised hisdisagreements with the King and furthered the increaseof the royal prestige which would never have attainedits final zenith had the Premier originally played forhis own hand instead of for the good of the country.
Text Appearing After Image:
Photograph from Britisli Pictorial Service M. Venezelos (On his left is the Greek Minister in London) GREECE AND THE WAR 137 Thus, if the popularity and power of M. Venezelosgreatly declined in Greece between the time of hisre-election of June, 1915, and his return to power afterthe abdication of the King in 1917, this decline is dueto the fact that His Excellency was subjected to attacksfostered by German propaganda and carried out byhis political and lifelong adversaries — the leaders ofthe Old Parties in Greece — that he was believed tohave sanctioned a foreign landing on Greek soil, andthat he favoured war, in which the majority of Greeksdid not want to engage on either side, rather thanthat he advocated a programme destined to furtherthe cause of the Allies. Turning to the attitude of Greece towards the War,the events which have taken place since 1914 mayconveniently be discussed as having occurred in fourmore or less distinct stages, the first of which lasteduntil the entry
