The Bird of Paradise Alfus could not think it earthly. Withintense delight the monk leaned backagainst the mossy bank, listening to thestrain. The song lasted but a momentand ceased as suddenly as it had begun.Alfus desired to hear it again. He lookedfor the bird, and waited, but it was gone.Around him all was silence. Even thebreeze seemed to have ceased its rustlingamong the leaves of the trees. The monkslowly rose and began his way backthrough the woods to the monastery. But how everything seemed to havechanged. Could it be that he was in apart of the woods he had never visited be-fore? He, too, did not seem to be thesame. His steps were now halting andslow, and all his body seemed feeble andstiff. As he looked at his beard he sawthat it was gray. He walked on in amazement. Thetrees seemed to have become much largersince he had entered the forest. Even thebushes had grown into tall trees. Slowly and painfully he picked his wayback through the dense forest, and afterseveral hours of walking came to the openland. Eagerly he looked up to the mon-astery, but that too had changed. It wasolder and grayer than before and seemedto have increased in size. A new portionhad been added, and the entrance gatewas not the same which had stood therewhen he left in the morning. Everythinglooked older. What could have happened? He hadbeen gone but a few hours, yet all theworld had changed. It seemed as if hewere in another century. Alfus passedhis hand across his eyes as if to clear hissight and anxiously walked on.
